Although we’re in the business of auto collision repair, the truth is that we wish you never have to use us for it. Of course we’ll put your vehicle back together and have it looking like new following a collision, but we’d prefer that you never get involved in an automotive accident in the first place. To help you protect yourself, your family, and your vehicle, here are a few defensive driving tips from your friends here at Greulich's Automotive Service & Collision:
- Don’t Follow Too Closely
Keeping a safe following distance is one of the easiest and most commonly broken rules of defensive driving. At the very least, you should have at least 3 seconds in between you and the vehicle in front of you. When visibility is low or weather conditions are less than perfect, you should increase the following distance to at least 5 seconds. If you keep your distance, you will almost always have an escape route or will be able to take some sort of evasive action with ease.
- Watch Out for Aggressive Drivers
Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how safely you drive but how well you can avoid aggressive drivers. If another driver is endangering you or threatening to cause a collision, the best tactic is avoidance. Common aggressive driving behaviors include tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic, passing cars on the right, and racing for a position on the highway.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings
One of the major fundamentals of defensive driving is observing and responding to the unexpected things that other drivers do. By constantly scanning the road ahead and behind you, you will be able to spot aggressive drivers, road hazards, debris, and other traffic conditions that may cause an accident. It’s also a good idea to mentally prepare an “escape plan” while driving in traffic in case a dangerous situation presents itself.
Even if you are the safest drivers on the planet, you aren’t impervious to car accidents. Fortunately, the auto body and collision repair specialists here at Greulich's Automotive can have your vehicle back to pre-collision condition in no time at all.
